Love As A Second Language

If God is love
What are we but the understudies
Like amateur craftsman of something divine
Does practice make perfect?

What is this antithesis of our humanity
Are we second nature fakes or best attempts
When all we are is graded on a curve of forgiveness
When mercy is the only way to sustain
The efforts of our fluctuating commitment

Love potency of first words in the infancy
Our lessons in a disenchanted fantasy
More than romance but something true
Evermore distinguished as we age
What is love but a lifetimes lesson in learning how to

Oh the masquerade of heart shoppers
And the tattered remains of hand me down love songs
It's not the words but the ways that tell most true
As we retailer used hearts and recreate joys after I do's

I want to play more than house but embody home
Un-tethered from all that is formerly broken
As character is the tell between the authentic and the fool
Every promise seen never risks coming up empty when unspoken

Liberated from expectation and learning to become the call
When love is a foreign tongue
It is a second language bringing out the best in us all

Somewhere between response and reaction
The longing that drives us
And the impulse of spontaneous passion

Love is a diamond under pressure framing the light
A prism of a greater fire proven by its will to fight...
